This is easy to explain. As far as he is concerned, he is retaking what was stolen from them. He believes russia consists of the soviet borders, and has sworn to restore those borders, so ukraine is just a part of that plan.
If the US and europe let him have ukraine, it will have been proven that might makes right, and he will continue the war in 5-10 years when he has recharged the batteries.
So a diplomatic end now, will yield a 5x greater war in 5-10 years. I say, let's finish it now, once and for all, and depose Putin and have him humiliated at ICJ.
