NEW YORK — The Justice Department on Monday told federal prosecutors in New York to drop corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams, who was indicted in September and accused of being under illegal foreign influence and accepting bribes through campaign donations and luxury travel perks.
The memo from acting deputy attorney general Emil Bove said the decision was not based on the evidence or theory of the case against Adams, but was because the case could interfere with both Adams’s upcoming reelection effort and his “ability to devote full attention and resources” to addressing illegal immigration and violent crime in New York City, according to a copy obtained by The Washington Post.
Bove said the charges should be dismissed “without prejudice,” which means the indictment could be brought again in the future.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York declined to comment.
President Donald Trump has expressed sympathy for Adams even as many officials and residents in New York said the charges made Adams unfit for office. Adams attended Trump’s inauguration and met with Trump and his advisers at the president’s golf club near his Palm Beach, Florida, residence shortly before that.
