Reddish-hued smoke is what was seen....both chemicals can produce
similiar colors.
"Because Ammonium Nitrate contains nitrogen and oxygen, an
oxidizer-heavy reaction produces more NOx fumes (colorless, yellow,
orange, or red, depending on the concentration, temperature, and
background)."
"Reddish-hued smoke: The presence of sodium perchlorate and other
perchlorates can contribute to the reddish color of the smoke produced
during a fire or explosion. This is because certain metal ions, like
those found in perchlorates, can absorb and re-emit light at specific
wavelengths, resulting in a reddish hue"
