I wouldn't trust Google as far as I could throw them, I refuse to have Google-anything.
I can't remember which company/site, but I ran into some online service that flat out refused to work without providing your phone number. My cell phone is old, and doesn't do text messages, calls only. If anything mandates a cell number, I move along.
