You initiate it to let someone know you have reached your destination

Yea. Remember, I read the articles (that you usually outright deny without
reading them if you feel that you need to protect Apple's sacred honor).
The article didn't clearly say whether it will work more than once so
thanks for confirming it only works as a oneshot - which you should know as
you have tested it and worked with it since iOS 17 first came out.
Much appreciated.
The reason I ask is that fully automatic geofenced "I'm here" texting is
available on both iOS and on Android but it takes a separate app to do it.
But I think, based only on what I read in badgolferman's original
post, that it doesn't work all the time. It's a oneshot, it seems.

Is it a constant oneshot? Or is it set & forget?
If you want someone to see your location indefinitely or some times and
not others, there's an existing location sharing feature for that.
Thanks. Understood.
I have iPhones and iPads but I only use them to test things out as I'm on
Android most of the time, not iOS. Thanks for your helpful advice.
On Android, for those with technical expertise, it would likely be done
with Tasker/Automate automation, and for that there are already plenty of
plugins but it takes more knowhow than using the native OS to do it.
https://ifttt.com/applets/hG8iUPb6-automatically-send-a-message-from-your-android-phone-when-you-leave-workOf course, with an extra app, both Android & iOS can do it permanently,
which is why I had asked the question of the native Apple oneshot.
https://www.iamherezone.com/ "This app allows users to send pre-generated messages based on
their geofence location area, thus informing other users when
they enter or leave a geographical area. The user defines the
geographical area by drawing it on the map. The app supports
SMS messaging, WhatsApp, email, and push notifications."
1. Draw a zone (on OpenStreetMap)
2. Write your text message
3. Select recipients
Create multiple zones
Store multiple recipients
Send default and customized messages
Setup recurring and one-time messages
Add icon and color to each zone
But, as I said, on both iOS & Android, it takes a separate app to do it.

That's actually a complement to Apple since it's native to the OS.
