 Does Apple charge a premium for expanding the storage? Absolutely.
 Is it worth it in order to get a personal computer system that works as well as a Mac does? Absolutely.
 And having empty space isn't "elite".

Particularly since having the storage be internal is primarily only a concern today for people who need the mobility of a laptop.
Everyone else who's on a desktop can readily buy an external SSD, including the URL link that Joel posted earlier today...
