But as a nonagenarian I do understand about falling down! So far I have

 You can pick *any* reference you want but those with physics degrees know
what Einstein's equivalency principle means.
 Essentially the earth is round (and all planets are round) simply because
the electrostatic outward repulsion exactly equals the inward rushing 4D
spacetime attraction to massenergy - which is what determines sphericity.
