I was window shopping Bimmers and found a 1-series online
(2010-12ish) that was really cheap. Then after it hadn’t been bought
for a month it got cheaper and the listing started detailing some of
the issues. Hard pass.  I’ve always been interested in an entry level
older BMW. There was another one that was kinda cool looking but I
was already in the process of dealing with my Civic getting
rear-ended and totaled and replacing it with an HR-V.  I also had my
eye on an ILX around the same price range. Those were pretty much
fancier Civics. I rarely see them and they were discontinued.

  I am not a BMW fan, but only because I prefer more practical cars.
However I appreciate the BMW dedication to the driving experience nd
realize its popularity with people who like a more spirited drive.
 My earlest recollection of BMWs was the BMW 2002 models of the 1970s.
Maybe someone can describe their experience with those models and
compare it to today's 1xx or 3xx models.

I can't speak about any direct comparison between the BWM 2002 and the current 1 and 3 series; I can only speak in general.
Safety regulations and customer expectations have driven cars with similar passenger capacity to be larger and a lot heavier than the cars from 50 years ago.
The BMW 2002 has curb weights between 2,100 and 2,400 pounds, while my 135i weighs 4,250 pounds; almost exactly twice as much as the two-door 2002.
Of course, my 135i's N55 3 litre turbo 6 cylinder engine has almost exactly 3 times the power of 1,990cc engine of the 2002, so...
So my car is going to feel a little less agile in cornering and braking, but there is less difference than you might think. My car has very large tires which tend to equalize the that more than you'd expect.
