It allows me to form my
own opinion without being told what to think.

 It's called making conversation or having a discussion. Having an opinion
is not forcing anyone how to think. It adds perspective and *makes* you
think. I do understand that kind of attitude is frowned upon these days.

Amazing that the very same people who will criticize you for supposedly "tell [them] what to think"...
...are themselves usually doing exactly that.
