i've never used email any more than necessary but i've read that
gmail is notoriously spammy . . . couldn't be nearly as horrible
as google groups was . . . could it? is gmail really that putrid?

GMail users who aren't accustomed to checking the
junk folder for legitimate eMail sometimes complain
to senders that they never received the eMail that
was sent to them.  It's a strategy that many free
webmail providers use to claim a spam-free inbox,
but it comes at the cost of junking legitimate
messages from senders who haven't been whitelisted
(which may also serve as an example of how a pure
technology-based anti-spam solution can't solve a
human problem, at least not entirely).

GMail also has many users who send spam, and on a
daily basis some of them also try to sell (whatever
it is they claim to be selling) to our spamtraps as
well as our users.  The volume of spam received
also varies from one user to the next (ditto for
spamtraps).  Google has a vast user base, so it's
certainly a significant challenge.
