just curious... the popular "blueworldhosting" server currently shows
over twenty-four thousand (24,712) articles in news:fido7.ru.military
There is 1 year less on i2pn2, but much more on csiph (since 2015), all readable, especially in Russian, archives in Arabic. Often, an nntp server offers a long list of message titles but their content is inaccessible, the sysop decides, nntp sysops are rarely reliable or trade in binaries, the best free servers have closed. That's why fido could be reborn ...
Is fido moderated? Sometimes. This moderator is omnipresent: Approved:
gateway@fido7.ruHow to access? Fortunately, gogle-groups this parasite has been stopped, there are still gateways apparently (there are quite a few remailed messages, see the encapsulated-remailing method). Russia and Crimea seem to have hosts, you would have to find a recent fidonet directory then the phone number of the BBS or its DNS address. fido7.f400.link ?
https://bbs.fandom.com/wiki/FidoNet#FidoNet_availabilityhttps://www.fidonet.orgThey say: Use telnet for fidonet. It's a good idea, but BBSs allow you to bypass the internet.
More info in the active groups and their FAQs, everything is in Russian (google-translate doesn't like it). The West has disowned fido, for convenience.
fido7.f400.link increments a counter in the routing over time, new nodes? There would be 334 (where?), it's plausible.
Fido has its nomenclature xzone.xxxcounty.xxxnode.xxxxpoint plus remailers, no need for DNS since it originally went through BBSs (telephone). You can even go through amateur radio.
Some explanations and political information on fido7.ru.anarchy
Hello!
Hello!
however, the oldest article for this newsgroup (fido7.ru.military) on
the server (news.blueworldhosting.com) is dated 2022/03/22 ~three and
one-half years old, which suggests "fidonet.org" approved articles to
this popular moderated newsgroup expire before the server's longevity
of about twenty-one (21) years, as is evident for enduring newsgroups
i've had very good luck with russian freeware (e.g. https://aimp.ru/)
and websites, but i have no experience with fidonet (only usenet, and
formerly with bbs) . . . because it's moderated, is it like political,
or just common interests in all things military without east vs. west?
Russia censors websites that offer VPN downloads, I don't know anything about the rest, but I see remailing, approvals maiby needed for remailing, and a few groups that have survived for reasons I don't know (technical means, confidentiality?).
