if you're open to textual readers (eg. slrn) you can run a newsreader in
a term app for android. with modern large screens that's an option, and
you'd have a fully functional software.

Adding value (I hope) to that slrn/tin/rn suggestion, is that Android has
always been able to run any Linux distribution (including desktops).

This is all for free. And the Android phone does not need to be rooted.
Once you have the 'nix you like on your Android, all the magic comes over.

If the OP does go for a nix-related newsreader on Android, all I ask is
that the OP let us know what works as we all keep tabs on this stuff but
not everyone can test every newsreader out there (as I had, long ago).
Termux it's easier and it's at F-Droid.
Also, giving how implementing NNTP it's easier than email at least,
IDK how they didn't adapt a client for Android since long ago.
