No, not a criminal .... at least not at the start .... when he was a member of the (Austro-Hungarian??) Navy who jumped ship whilst in London (so becoming a criminal, A.W.O.L.) who then joined the crew of a ship heading to Australia, where *GOLD* had recently been found. The Ship let some of the passengers off at Perth and Adelaide then sailed on to Portland, Vic, where the rest of the passengers and some of the Crew were put ashore and a minimal crew (including Great-Grand-Father) sailed the ship out of Portland Harbour and scuttled the ship (so becoming a bigger criminal!!)!
He then made his way to the Ballarat, Vic, Goldfields before settling in Melbourne. I don't think he made much money as a gold-digger but as a Blacksmith, he did O.K.'ish!!
