Who's 'Palpatine'?? Was He/She/It in the first trilogy??
It is the name of the evil Emperor as seen in The Empire Strikes back and
The Return of the Jedi - we learn his names in the prequel trilogy, where
he has a public face as Senator Palpatine and is secretly also known as
Darth Sidious.
Then of course in the ninth movie he makes a Masterly return from death
(ooh, Who reference!) - as in, “yes I’m back from certain death, no I’m not
going to tell you how, get over it”.
Trivia note: Palpatine/Sidious/the Emperor has been played since Return of
the Jedi by Iain McDiarmid - and in editions from 2000 or so onwards he was
retrofitted into Empire. The original Emperor in the version of TESB that I
saw in the cinema was played by a woman, Marjorie Eaton, but voiced by a
man, Clive Revill.
