actually read after having posted them .... and then re-marked
as "Unread".

 My newsreader can highlight any reply to my own messages. Are
you sure yours doesn't have an option in the settings to do
that? It makes life so much easier.
 

You say 'either', I say 'either' (doesn't quote work in text but, hopefully, you get the idea! ;-P )
My Newsreader, natively, shows unread messages in *BOLD* .... so I would know, anyway, .... but this is my little, extra-special method.
