  at times i detect something off with the subtitles, my understanding of japanese is passable enough that i can tell its not quite right.

Well such errors in translation to English have been
happening for longer than Large Language Models have been
called AI. People make mistakes all the time. i remember
in Masson Ikkoku Godai attempts to indicate his desired
relationship with the father of Kykou and they flubbed it
completely in the translation.
