Don't discount "flu". (You did mention the example of the
"Spanish Flu" of WWI.)
The "bird flu" that is starting to transmit to cattle, for
instance... There's no human-to-human transmission (yet)
but about 900 people have caught it from cattle.
And half of them died of it.
