The moment you said 'two book(s), I realized this couldn't be
the 'When the Wind Blows' that I know: the one by Raymond Briggs.

Its one the saddest and most harrowing graphic novels ever written,
and made into a nightmare fuel movie, with a David Bowie soundtrack.
Wouldn't it be more accurate to say a Roger Waters soundtrack?
I've never seen the movie, but the soundtrack CD only has one song
each by David Bowie, Hugh Cornwell, Genesis, Squeeze and Paul
Hardcastle and then ten tracks by Waters.
You're right. I haven't watched the movie through, just clips on YT.
