This reminds me that Hamilton's Starwolf trilogy has been sitting dormant and unread on one of my shelves. I need to read that some time.
As I recall, the Starwolf trilogy was fairly pedestrian, at least compared to other novels that Hamilton wrote during the second half of his career.
