Hi typers and readers,
"Saevus Corax Deals with the Dead" by K.J. Parker,
a pseudonym of Tim Holt.
Oh - I did not know that. Thanks. (Assuming you mean Tom Holt.)
And thanks for your reviews too - I've added a few things to my list as a result.

Saevus Corax is also a pseudonym of
the character and finding out who he is and why he is leading
a company of 500 men to clean up battlefields for a living
is part of the story. He is on the run with very large rewards
offered for his capture. He mercilessly disposes of anyone who
knows his true identity though he regrets it.
Many adventures and horrid experiences are endured
by Saevus before he returns to his trade. It has humorous
episodes and is part of at least a trilogy of stores about
Saevus and his adventures. If these come out while I am still
living I will read them. The setting is a very warlike
world where battles have been happening fairly often.
