A junior officer witnesses as an unqualified, xenophobic captain
attempts to negotiate the transfer from aliens of technology that
will permit humans to be even more annoying than they currently
are.

You complain that audio books are slow. I agree. I also
agree that a lot of YT videos have info that could have
been a couple paragraphs of text rather than a 10 minute
video.
Have you tried bumping up the speed? Most readers (and YT)
can do this. I find that at 1.5x pretty much everything is
perfectly understandable - the readers just sound a bit
enthusiastic. I've got used to that, and now listen to a
most videos and podcasts at 1.75x. 2x is too fast, except
for slow speakers. I've heard that some listen at
3x - mainly blind people who've been doing it all their
lives.
Some players will also auto-edit out pauses, which saves
time with some loss of characterization.
