Any attempt to film LOTR was doomed to failure, and yes, there were attempts, and yes, they failed.
That Peter Jackson's attempt succeeded was a miracle because it, too, was doomed to failure, and completely failed to fail.
I hope I can claim to be a sufficiently picky Tolkien aficionado, but I could find no reasonable fault. I have now watched the films more often than I've read the book, which is not easy.
