KSC isn't really a very safe place to launch a polar flight from, because
there's too much land directly north and south of it. Not that Lompoc is
perfect either but at least you have it nice and clear if you launch
south from there.
Not that Baikonur/Tyura-Tam isn't worse in every way of course.
