 Reminds me that one of our English Lit textbooks featured beginnings
of existing short stories to be discussed in class, including
suggesting endings.

I like that idea, and I think it would have been fun to try.
I'm pretty sure Mr Darcy would have gone to war and lost an arm or an eye.
  One of these was Aldiss's "But Who Can Replace a

Man?", to which I looked forward to supplying the actual ending,
having read it in a collection earlier that year.
 Sadly, we didn't cover thet one.

I did get that collection from our middle-school library, which was reasonably well stocked with SF. None of which, of course, made it into the curriculum.  Though the assigned reading was pretty decent, no complaints there.
