brought to mind a short story from no later than 1956 about something
similar, except that, as I recall, it was an attribute of some
kind of object.
I can only recall Lovecraft's "The colour out of space" and Shea's excellent if misspelled sequel "The color out of time".
(As I made the misspelling joke I felt a strong force affecting my fingers, causing me to misspell even the simplest words. I think we've found the fifth force!).
