" not to mention convinced that many slaves preferred being
slaves. "
You're thinking that slavery mushes all people into one
mold.
One of my acquaintences has been known to commit a crime
just to get into a supervised situation, which has led me to
think that nursing homes should offer supervised living as
well as assisted living.
Just as "assisted" can range from "we send in a house
cleaner once a week" to "don't get out of bed without
ringing for a nurse", "supervised" could range from "Be home
before bedtime" to "Stay on the campus and make sure we know
where you are at all times".
