 The popular translation that was available when I was a kid is just terrible,
but apparently there is a better one available now.  So if you read it when
you were young and you read it in translation it might be worth re-reading
in a better translation.

Strongly seconded! I just re-read it last year, and it held up well, and I'm sure that was partly due to having a better translation.
Regarding the various translations:
- Make sure to avoid any translations that rename the characters as Harry (the nephew) and Hardwigg (the uncle).
- I do recommend the translation I read by William Butcher, if that helps any.
