I had never heard that term before this thread.

You must not have a cat.  2 am seems to drive them wild.

 Most mammals have "zoomies", including humans, mainly when they're
young and full of excess energy. You often see things like baby
elephants or rhinos  running around and bouncing on their feet.
 It is relative though. Sloth zoomies aren't probably much more than a
slow amble.  ;-)

 Not only the young; our now sadly departed 17 year old cat would
suddenly come tearing through the house, up over the bed and back down,
and then shoot off in a different direction...

I did say "*mainly* when young".  :-)
You can induce the zoomies in kids by feeding them lots of sugar ... especially if you're the grandparent / uncle / aunt / etc. and feed the kids just before you give them back to their parents.  ;-)
