I believe I've heard that Christians believed
for a long time - along with a "young earth"
and creationism - that species extinction
didn't, wouldn't happen.  That whatever God had
crested would continue to exist - unless he
changed his mind about that.  And so species
didn't need to be protected from destructive
exploitation.  God was protecting them.
