It's not about winning, it's about doing your best! And also winning!

Neat topic. I enjoyed the Zelazny, but the re-reading experiment a few years later where I read one chapter a day in October did not go as well.
I have the Anderson, and have pulled it out several times - but always put it back. Your description nudges me to try it.
Some others:
Banks - The Player of Games (Culture novel)
Cook - Wicked Bronze Ambition (Garrett P.I. novel - Tournament of Swords plays prominently)
Dahl - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Golden Ticket contest, plus the contest-within-the-contest reveal at the end)
King - The Long Walk, and The Running Man (both as Richard Bachman initially)
Rowling - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Triwizard tournament)
