 Even if only 10% of those entering the US from Mexico have that sort
of background that's a very very serious problem - both in terms of
the drug trade and the overall level of violence as well as
intimidation of US citizens of Mexican extraction (just like Canada
has a serious problem with relatively new Canadian citizens of Chinese
extraction at the hands of Chinese agents). Which for Canada is a MUCH
bigger deal in Vancouver than in say Montreal for geographically
obvious reasons.
 

The vast majority of the illegal immigrants in the US do not come in over any border.
They come in on a legal visa, and just overstay their time period. Beefing up the border controls will do very little to stop them from staying in the country.
The border is one small part of controlling illegal immigration.  I you want to REALLY control illegal immigration, it's pretty simple.
Fine the ever lovin' shit out of employers and businesses that hire them without verification.  But Congress won't do that because it would hurt their buddies that fund their campaigns.
