audience got tired of having DEI shoved down their throats? Although
the ratings were not awful, they might have been that much better if
they focused more on story-telling and less on the gender and ethnicity

I don't know where you are getting that from. Yes, Vanessa Lachey is
female but it's not like her character was a token addition as they
gave her a good back story that fit in with the position she held and
provided a good basis for a number of stories. Much like they did with
Jethro Gibbs on the original NCIS. There are shows where the effort
seems to be more on DEI than worrying about the stories but NCIS
Hawaii doesn't seem to be one.

So they thought having a woman of color leading the team made them cancel
proof?

Again, another comment that doesn't seem justified.

 
Also, the NCIS Perth team is led by a woman of color so at worst they’ve
just broken even.

I would that Lachey also ends up in another show that I want to watch.
So I guess Yasmine Al-Bustami did get written out to save money since
they were adding LL Cool J. I was wondering if they were ever going to
bring her back as at first they mentioned her fairly often (she was
serving as  the NCIS officer on board a carrier) but I noticed she was
not getting mentioned at all lately.
