credible that the January 6 people ever had a credible chance of
overthrowing the US government. And therefore were annoying but not a
credible threat to the things we hold dear.
 To me you are engaging in gross hyperbole. January 6, 2021 was NOT
November 9, 1860 (aka the day South Carolina became the first state to
secede from the Union)

You don't get it, do you?  It absolutely could have worked.  No hyperbole.
If Congress can't agree, the choice is thrown into the House where each state delegation (not congressman) would choose the president.
That's the process.  That leaves only 14 days that Republicans needed to delay the certification.

Right.  Mitch McConnell only had to delay the certification for 2 weeks, and Trump is president.
