Must have been because of the "9 to 5" role, I certainly never hated him.
9 to 5 was a lousy movie.

But it was a cultural 'event' that, e.g., every viewer remembers.
I never even bothered to see 9 to 5 -- in the theater or later on TV, lol.
On Golden Pond (a true classic and a cultural event) was probably where I first became solidly acquainted with him.
I watched at least some early episodes of Mary Hartman and if I saw him on that I soon forgot about him.
Kind of like one time when I was rewatching The Bounty and thought "I'll be damned, that's Liam Neeson."
