 I get a monthly fee for rental of the physical DVR unit and another monthly
fee for DVR service (as though you could have one without the other).

As do I - I think this is standard for cable TV.
What ticks me off is the "broadcast carriage" fee(?) or whatever it's called - that adds about $25 to the cable bill all by itself!!
