That's as it should be.
Trouble is these days there are plenty of
people advociating for those who DIDN'T enter the country legally -
though for the zillionth time a sizeable number of those "illegals"
are those who entered legally but then (while within the United
States) became illegals when they overstayed their visas.
As a teenager I entered Mexico (via the Tijuana crossing) with my
parents for a day trip and re-entered the US via the crossing S of San
Diego. In those pre 9-11 days Canadians didn't need a passport to
enter the US (though that has been required since 9-11 which is why
the number of Canadians with passports is about triple what it was pre
9-11)
