OK, rebuilding my Thunderbird RAT database seems to have worked - I now
see shawn's original post. (I will post my followup WDYW? post here too...)

But this is annoying - I believe this is the second time I've had to
rebuild my Thunderbird database in the last couple of months...

During a session, the connection isn't supposed to be left up all the
time. It's supposed to close, then reopen when the user signals to get
another article or to post. It is the nature of Thunderbird that it
loses track of open connections and isn't always aware that an open
connection has closed and a new connection must be made. It's highly
likely that this can lead to database corruption.
