No such thing in the Star Wars universe. When the crew of the falcon land
on an asteroid, they just hop out and walk around despite the fact that
there would be no gravity and no atmosphere. The ships are clearly
navigating in an atmosphere at all times and blow up in oxygen rich
fireballs.

Oh, yeah, and it isn’t very cold in space, either.

While we're at it, why did all the other rebel fighters who weren’t actively
making a trench run just flying around up there doing nothing? Why not zip
around to the big honkin' dish and try and f-up their super-weapon? I bet a
few bombs dropped on the emitting points for the mega-lasers would crack some
crystals or do some damage that would make it impossible to fire or lessen its
power. Worth a try, anyway, if you’re not doing anything else but circling.

And if you're not going to do that, why not protect the guys making the run by
dropping down into the trench behind Vader and his wingmen and started picking
them off the way they were picking off the X-wings?

And what was the point of the trench run in the first place? Why spend 3
minutes zipping along an artificial canyon, giving time for fighters behind
you to pick you off, and then trying to hit a hole in the ground
horizontally-- how does that even work? A torpedo shot straight out of the
X-wing flies forward a a few hundred yards, then suddenly does a 90-degree
turn and flies down into a hole? This is space. You can move in three
dimensions. Just fly directly *at* the hole from above and shoot straight into
it with no need to spend minutes dodging and weaving, hoping the Sith Lord
behind you doesn't turn you into atoms.
