 Which is ridiculous - no sane person believes Trump actually created
COVID. That said my home town was for a while hosting the largest
COVID breakout in Canada (believed to have been primarily in 3 seniors
care homes where they had 4 or 5 staff who worked all 3 - all 3 are
about 2-3 miles from my home so you can imagine my reaction in spring
2020 what I found _that_ out though at least staff didn't abandon
patients the way it happened in one Ontario facility and one Quebec
facility - the military was sent in to clean up the mess and it was
literally a mess since some of these poor people had had no care at
all in nearly a week and several of them were incontinent - I remember
hearing about the soldier who said that he had been in Afghanistan for
3 years but never seen anything like _that_)
 I find it entirely credible (and have read an American book that
reached the same conclusion in rather more detail than I'm doing here)
that the Chinese had a lab leak which they covered up rather than
coming clean with the result that things were much worse than they
might have been.
 I know my late wife was pooh-poohing the whole thing which from her
view wasn't idiotic given I had been in Hong Kong during the first
SARS outbreak (2002 if I recall correctly) though it was
geographically confined to certain Hong Kong neighborhoods that I had
gone nowhere near on my purchasing trip. And given my town ended up
having no SARS outbreak she felt vindicated and assumed the same in
2020 with COVID.....
 No - the worst that can be alleged of Trump is that he mishandled the
US response and wasn't as fast as he could have been on distribution
of PPE and the first vaccines.
 That said, there was no medical reason for believing that being as
close to each other as those Black Lives Matter protesters were was
sane or sensible given conditions at the time. Which wasn't just in
Minneapolis. No question those protesters were a vector at the time.

I learned after the crisis was over that SARS was very nearly an EXTREMELY serious situation, although I didn't fully realize it at the time. SARS came up in a discussion at my book club a year or two afterwards and two of the participants had in-depth knowledge. One was a fairly senior guy in the OPP and the other was a microbiologist at the local hospital and they both said it nearly turned into a much more serious outbreak than Covid given that SARS had a far higher mortality rate (and was more easily spread if I remember correctly). They were preparing for a major emergency and mass mortality....
