I just watched the first episode of Dexter: Original Sin which dropped today and thought I should post about it.
Several of the original Dexter executive producers (= writers) worked on this and they've clearly made an effort to keep it close to the original. That means the opening credits and music are very familiar, as is the style in general.
A big surprise for me was that Michael C. Hall appears on-camera in the first bit of the program; I don't want to spoil it beyond that. Suffice it to say that it is reasonable and satisfying and serves as a framing device for everything that follows. After that, his presence is felt via the voice-overs.
The younger versions of the various characters we know from Dexter all do a decent job of capturing the original characters although the guy who plays Angel didn't bother to learn to speak the way he did. (The original actor has something - not sure if it's an accent or some kind of speech impediment - but the new guy doesn't and didn't try to imitate it.)
We see young Dexter at the end of his 4 year pre-med and he hasn't yet killed anyone, although the urges to do so are growing stronger and harder to resist. Harry is still working with Dexter trying to get him to resist but even Harry recognizes that this will not work forever.
I don't want to drop any spoilers because I assume many people will want to watch this. Suffice it to say that I think you will find this episode worth watching just like I did.
Unless the quality tanks unexpectedly, I expect to keep watching this as the 10 episode first season rolls out.
