Robin mentioned Season 2 of SAS Rogue Heroes recently in one of her bulletins. I had never heard of this series but it made me curious so I tracked down Season 1 to see if it was my cup of tea and found that it was. I just finished Season 2 so I thought I should post about it.
The SAS - Special Air Service - is a British regiment that is a rough equivalent to the Green Berets or Seal Teams, which I believe were at least partially inspired by the SAS.
This series looks at the origins of the SAS, which took place in North Africa during WWII before America had entered the war. Each episode begins with a claim that the contents of the episode are based on the truth and that the most improbable things in it are mostly true. It is NOT a documentary: there is no voiceover and only a little historical footage in the story. It is essentially a re-enactment of the exploits of the SAS which had a dramatic impact on their German and Italian enemies in North Africa and then in Sicily and Italy proper.
It's also a character study, particularly of the leaders of the SAS.
They are a rough lot by and large with no interest in fancy uniforms or military discipline but they are remarkably effective. They also bump shoulders with major figures of the day, even including Winston Churchill himself.
If you like an action show with the added virtue of being (mostly) true, I think you'll enjoy this show just like I did. IMDB rates it at 8.1 out of 10.
It's a BBC production. Each of the two seasons (so far) consist of six 60 minute episodes. Don't expect many familiar faces but I think the cast do a good job with their roles.
