I've never heard of a doctor who didn't say "Congratulations, you've
got a beautiful baby <boy or girl>" and I've been there done that 3
times.
 I've never been aware that anyone ever taken that as a statement of
fact or "assignment".
 (In my eldest's birth the doctor and I were at the foot of the bed and
he handed her to me telling me to hand her to my wife)

But now it seems that informal opinion is to become holy writ...
