I've got RETURN OF THE JEDI on in the background on cable while I clean today
and there's something that's always bugged me.

When the Rebel fleet, at the direction of Admiral Ackbar, concentrates all its
firepower on the Executor (Vader's Super-Star Destroyer), it loses its
shields, suffers a direct hit to its bridge by a crashing A-Wing fighter, then
careens out of control and plunges bow-first into the surface of the Death
Star.

Realistically, that should have ended things right there. Such a monumental
collision of two space vessels of such titanic size and mass would have
liberated so much energy, it would have destroyed or crippled the Death Star
all on its own. Yet what we see on screen is that surviving it was super easy,
barely an inconvenience, for the Emperor.

Despite what Lucas showed us with the limited SFX of the 80s, the impact of a
665-million ton ship would have likely destroyed 1/4 of the Death Star at a
minimum, and that’s assuming it didn't set off a series of cascading
explosions all throughout the station. There would have been no need for the
rebels to fly into the superstructure and do their thing; the Death Star would
have been toast after its collision with the Executor.

It also would probably also have likely careened out of orbit into Endor's
gravity well and crashed down onto the surface, which, RISE OF SKYWALKER
notwithstanding, would have been an extinction-level event for the Ewoks and
all other life on the planet.
