House of David [new] (12:01 am, Prime Video)
"House of David" tells the story of the ascent of the biblical figure,
David, who eventually becomes the most renowned and celebrated king of
Israel. The series follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim
to his own pride. At the direction of God, the prophet Samuel anoints an
unlikely, outcast teenager as the new king. As Saul loses his power over
his kingdom, David finds himself on a journey to discover and fulfill
his destiny, navigating love, loss, and violence in the court of the
very man he's destined to replace. As one leader falls, another must
rise. Eight episodes? Three episodes stream today, and the rest follow
with one episode weekly.
Is this Israeli? American?...
It's a United States production (this doesn't sound Evangelical to
you?). Here's the summary from Wikipedia about the production company:
The Wonder Project
In 2023, Jon Erwin founded a new studio called The Wonder
Project with former Netflix executive Kelly Hoogstraten "to
create a trusted brand that serves the faith and values audience
globally with movies and TV shows they didn't know were
possible." The new company received $100 million in seed funding
from companies including Lionsgate and filmmaker Dallas Jenkins,
who is a shareholder in the company. Their first project is
House of David, a historical drama series scheduled to be
released on Amazon Prime Video in 2025.
Dallas Jenkins was writer/director/executive director of The Chosen.
I have no idea where the huge pile of cash came from.
There are several other "faith based" studios that have been making theatrical movies for a number of years, so there is obviously enough demand that money will be found (and made).
