We see this here in real life, too. I can't count the number of times I've
heard Idris Elba described as an "African-American actor". He's neither of
those things. He's British, not African nor American. It's like in the lunatic
world of DEI/PC, all black people in the world, no matter their heritage or
nationality are now African and American whether they like it or not.
Hmmm. A very good friend of mine is indisputably black but born in
Canada and would be annoyed to be described as anything hyphenated
American....
There are terms like "African-Canadian" and "African-British", but they are far far less used than "African-American".
Of course there are also other similar terms, such as "Chinese-American", "Irish-American", etc. or even mulit-barrelled version like Irish-African-American. Americans in particular seem to be obssessed in pointlessly defining themselves down to a tiny sub-sub-sub-category.  :-\
It's a bit like the old joke about giving your full address as "123 This Road, SomeSuburb, SomeCity, SomeRegion, SomeCountry, Earth, Solar System, Milky Way, Universe."
