You are, of course, correct. "Classics" properly refers to the books
used to study the Greek and Latin from long ago. Those books or
authors can be called "classics" as well.
As to entertainment value, many people find Herodotus quite
interesting. And the comedies of Aristophanes are still quite funny,
as well as being the first works featuring Cloud Cuckoo Land, the
Crazy Professor, and the Pigs in a Poke. Not to mention /Lysistrata/.
