but then I remembered the new Matlock so I suppose it *is* legal.

The current Matlock tv series is produced on some sort of licensing or
other contractual basis, even though none of the copyright material of
the original show has been used. It's absurd that they would pay a
licensing fee but there is no infringement to allege.

I would be seriously pissed off if I tuned in that show, expecting to
see Hogan vs. Klink, and got a reality show about sandwiches.
