of an old show while being completely different but then I remembered
the new Matlock so I suppose it *is* legal.

You're assuming the new MATLOCK just used the name without bothering to get
permission. I'd be very surprised if the studio's lawyers allowed that to
happen. They probably tossed some money at the original show's rights holders
in order to use the name with no worries about future lawsuits. I have no idea
if the sandwich shop show did this or not, but the MATLOCK people almost
certainly did.
