 It turns out she quit NCIS because she decided the work schedule was too
grueling. At the time, everyone said nice things, so it wasn't clear
then.

I thought it was clear at the time, or shortly thereafter, that she wanted to leave because of the work schedule. I thought she said that explicitly.
I often wonder if actors who voluntarily leave successful shows early ever look back at the (hundreds of?) millions they left behind.
Same with Lola Glaudini in Criminal Minds. I think she left voluntarily.
