The Abyss 4k (movie; streaming premiere) (3:01 am, Disney+)
Approved by director James Cameron, The Abyss - Special Edition is an
extended director's cut of the 1989 underwater science fiction epic,
reinstating nearly a half hour of footage removed from the original
release under studio pressure.

I don't understand this. I went to watch this last night and the only version
on Disney+ has a 2:20-minute runtime, which is the runtime of the original
theatrical release according to IMDb, Grok, and the old DVD sitting on my
shelf. If a half hour of extra footage was added, it should be 2:50 minutes.
The link above takes you to the BluRay release, which also is labeled as 2:20
minutes.
WTF?
The Special Edition versions are showing up as 2:51 and 2:50 on the
gray while the regular editions are showing up as 2:20. Not sure what
was added to the special edition as the one I own is an original 2:20
version that I've watched multiple times over the years.

So it seems like, despite the announcement, Disney's version is just the same
old theatrical release we've always had.

Yes, that does seem to be the case. I looked and see there are 4K
versions of the original theatrical release and 4k versions of the
Special Edition. Not sure why Disney isn't streaming the Special
Edition. It's not that much longer and it would truly provide viewers
a more special experience.
